I would like to work with type in the editorial industry. I am interested in bilingual projects especially between Chinese and English. The project Ushering In Wealth and Prosperity is a typographic study exemplifying this. It observes that Hanzi is a more complicated writing system than Latin and its complexity is amplified in hand script.
Every character may vary because it is a process of seeking changes. Studying New Year's blessing ligatures written on walls, identifies that they exist in a grey area between signwriting and traditional calligraphy. The project reflects a desire to let everyone understand something of the blessing ligatures law and structure. In the contemporary era of factory lines many seemingly random things can be assembled. Blessing ligatures have this potential. Experiments analysed and documented movement, and the project results from a close observation of the spirit and anatomy of writing.
The research was an opportunity to explore a British logic of writing and from a Chinese perspective, a starting point to relearn them. The investigation studied the concept of visual languages and the narrative logic in the UK in order to enable effortless understanding for a British audience. Moreover, the project gives Chinese people a new method to relearn. Ushering In Wealth and Prosperity ligature is finished in three dimensions symbolising different perspectives through tools.
Parts; analysed and visualized by drawing with poster nibs. Strength; analysed and visualized by drawing with brushes. Paths; analysed and visualised by nib movements. The project is presented as a book in an En-Ch bilingual layout, customized for the cultural origin of the target audience.
It is in three parts; the first introducing anatomy dimensions; the second, the Chinese ligature; the third introducing anatomical details.
